One of North America’s most aquatic turtles (2), the common snapping turtle spends much of its time lying on the bottom of a water body or buried in mud in shallow water (2)(3)(5)(6). Although this species is seldom seen basking (2)(5), by day the common snapping turtle can often be seen floating lazily just below the water’s surface (2)(5)(6). Despite being a capable swimmer, the common snapping turtle tends to move by walking along the bottom of a pond.
